MIFFLINTOWN – An estimated 1 in 10 Pennsylvania residents has unclaimed property waiting for them. That totals more than $3 billion sitting in the Pennsylvania Treasury.

In the 82nd District, the office of Rep. John Hershey (R-Juniata/Mifflin/Franklin) has sent 1,400 postcards to residents who may have $10 or more in unclaimed property.

“It is important we link this money to its rightful owner. I’ve heard stories of people recovering tens of thousands of dollars, but even a few dollars can help pay a bill or go into your savings account instead of the Commonwealth’s account,” Hershey said.

According to State Treasurer Joe Torsella, the state receives hundreds of millions of dollars in unclaimed property every year from a variety of sources like forgotten savings accounts and insurance policies.

Unclaimed property can also include things like jewelry and coins from abandoned safe deposit boxes.

Residents wanting to research if they have unclaimed property can either visit the Pennsylvania Treasury’s website online at patreasury.gov or contact Hershey’s district office for his staff to do a search. There is no cost to residents either way.

There is no need to pay a private service to research or submit a claim. This is a free search for property that is legally yours.
