Hershey Supports Bills to Benefit PA Students, Mifflin County Academy
3/21/2019
HARRISBURG – To prepare people for in-demand and lucrative jobs across the state, Rep. John Hershey (R-Franklin/Juniata/Mifflin) voted in favor of the Good Jobs for Pennsylvania package of bills. The package received strong bipartisan support and has been sent to the Senate for further consideration.

“Previously, people often believed that anyone without an interest or aptitude to pursue a degree only had the option to pursue vocational training. However, that mindset is outdated as some of our most skilled and highly paid workers in the Commonwealth followed a career and technical education (CTE) track. Until we look at the facts, students and adults will miss out on lucrative and satisfying careers, and that’s a real shame,” Hershey said.

The CTE package includes measures to address business and industry, increase access to CTE programs and alleviate the stigma often associated with CTE. The bills would address the skills gap and worker shortages faced by many Commonwealth industries, as well as enhance educational programs and access to those opportunities for workers of all ages.

Mifflin County Academy of Science and Technology (MCAST), the CTE school in the 82nd District, has been vocal in its support of the package of bills.

“We commend Rep. Hershey for his advocacy for CTE; the bipartisan support for CTE in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives is very encouraging,” said Dan Potutschnig, administrative director for the Academy. “The bills that were approved this week provide additional support for CTE, which keeps students in school, provides opportunities for rewarding and family-sustaining careers, and supports economic and industrial growth throughout the Commonwealth.”

Approximately 350 students in grades 10, 11 and 12 from Mifflin and Juniata County high schools attend the Academy, in addition to their high school, to participate in vocational-technical educational programs. The Academy also offers adult CTE programs, helping people further their careers after high school.
